That’s because you’re aware that you’re dreaming while it’s happening and can even influence the action. Lucid dreaming can especially help you pay attention to the messages in your dreams. As I describe in the book, the ways God may communicate with you in your dreams include sending you creative inspiration, guiding you to solve problems, healing you from past pain, warning you about an issue that needs attention, and encouraging you with peace or confidence.

His dream had been so clear that he didn’t need to spend time trying to interpret it before taking action. Immediately afterward, Joseph gets up and obeys God’s directions. God tells Joseph what he needs to do to protect young Jesus from King Herod’s plans to kill him. Another instance of lucid dreaming may be the dream that Jesus’ earthly father, Joseph, has in which God instructs him to leave Israel and go to Egypt with his family. The “Jacob’s ladder” dream from Genesis 28 seems to involve Jacob being especially conscious of the fact that God and his holy angels are present during the dream. King Solomon seems quite lucid while carrying on a conversation with God during a dream ( 1 Kings 3). While the Bible never specifically mentions lucid dreaming, some of the vivid dreams it describes may have been lucid dreams. The Bible mentions many incidents of God communicating to people through dreams. Does the Bible Ever Mention Lucid Dreaming? (Or Anything Like It?) That awareness may help you control your dreams in some ways, for certain purposes. When you’re lucid dreaming, you do become aware of your dreams while they’re taking place. At times you may have some control over that process, but at other times you don’t, because you’re not always aware of your dreams. The content of your dreams always reflects how your mind is processing your thoughts and emotions. Your mind is constantly active, both while you’re awake and while you’re asleep. Sometimes you may simply be able to tell that you’re dreaming while your dream is happening. Lucid dreaming can happen naturally, even when you don’t intend to lucid dream. In Scripture, whenever anyone experienced a dream from God, God always made the meaning of the dream clear, whether directly to the person, through an angel, or through another messenger (Genesis 40:5–11 Daniel 2:45 4:19). If it is, prayerfully consider what God would have you do in response to your dream (James 1:5). If you have a dream and feel that perhaps God gave it to you, prayerfully examine the Word of God and make sure your dream is in agreement with Scripture. Dreams cannot usurp the authority of Scripture. This is not to say that God does not work miracles or even speak through dreams today, but anything God says, whether through a dream, vision, impression, or “still small voice,” will agree completely with what He has already revealed in His Word. However, we must keep in mind that the Bible is complete, having revealed everything we need to know from now until eternity. So God can speak through dreams, if He chooses to. There is also a prophecy of the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28), quoted by the apostle Peter in Acts 2:17, that mentions God using dreams.
Examples are Joseph, son of Jacob (Genesis 37:5–10) Joseph, the husband of Mary (Matthew 2:12–22) Solomon (1 Kings 3:5–15) and several others (Daniel 2:1 7:1 Matthew 27:19).
